The experience

What visiting Stubai Paragliding is really like

You reach Moos 18 in Neustift between 10:00 and 13:00, the window when thermals are smooth rather than sharp. Launch sites are free to enter; the flight itself is the paid part. Someone checks your shoes — ankle-covering boots, no sandals — and weighs you, because wing size follows body weight.

Read more Show less

You ride the cable car up with the canopy bag between your knees. At the launch meadow, your pilot lays out forty square metres of ripstop nylon and clips you into a harness that sits like a low chair. The briefing takes two minutes: run when told, keep running, do not sit down. You face downhill. The wing inflates behind you with a sound like a sail filling, four steps follow, and the ground stops being underfoot.

The climb comes first. Warm air off the eastern slope lifts you above the launch, and Neustift's church spire shrinks below. Serles fills one shoulder of the sky; the Habicht fills the other. Your pilot spirals, tips a wingtip, and you feel the harness press.

Descent runs eight to twelve minutes across the valley floor. You land on grass, feet first, walking two paces before stopping. The canopy settles behind you. Someone from the stubai paragliding school folds it while you unclip, still recalibrating what the ground feels like.

Stubai Paragliding: Tandem Flights Above the Valley

Tandem flights launch from the slopes above Neustift, Fulpmes and Schlick 2000, where certified pilots handle takeoff, thermals and landing while you sit back and watch the Stubai Glacier, the Serles and the Ruetz River slide past below. Most stubai paragliding tours run 10 to 25 minutes in the air depending on the launch altitude and conditions, with the alpine air carrying you over larch forest, cable car lines and the wide green floor of the Wipptal side valleys. Gleitschirmfliegen im Stubaital is a long-established part of the region's mountain sports scene, and Stubai Valley tandem flights suit complete beginners as readily as returning pilots.

Air over the Stubaital moves twice a day, and both directions were mapped by farmers long before they were mapped by pilots. The valley runs roughly southwest from Schönberg to the Sulzenau glacier, a thirty-five-kilometre trench walled by peaks above 3,000 metres. Sun warms the eastern flank first.

By late morning, heated air rises off the meadows near Neustift and Fulpmes, and the resulting thermals are steady enough that Tyrolean glider pilots have treated this corner of Austria as a proving ground since the sport's earliest Alpine seasons.

Organised flying arrived here in the 1980s, when hang gliders gave way to steerable canopies and the Elfer and Kreuzjoch lifts began carrying wings uphill alongside hikers. A stubai paragliding culture formed around those cable cars: schools, packing fields, and a shared radio frequency. Neustift became the administrative centre of it, with launch permissions negotiated between landowners, the Tyrolean aviation authority, and the local Gemeinde. Free access to the launch meadows remains part of that agreement — no entrance fee applies to the sites themselves.

The valley's competitive reputation was built by the Stubai Cup, staged each spring at Elfer, where manufacturers bring prototype wings to be flown in the cold, dense air of March. Discussion of stubai cup 2025 paragliding results still circulates among European pilots, and the Stubai Testival gathers the same crowd for demonstration flights and reserve-parachute clinics. Alongside the competitions sit the working schools. A stubai paragliding school here teaches ground handling on the flat pastures near Milders before students touch a mountain launch, and paragliding stubai valley instruction is delivered under Austrian ÖAeC licensing rules.

Geography explains the appeal better than any brochure. Glacial retreat left a broad, flat valley floor — an unusually forgiving landing zone for a high Alpine site. The Serles pyramid anchors the northern view; the Habicht rises to 3,277 metres opposite. Wind convergence along the ridgelines produces reliable lift bands, and cross-country routes toward the Wipptal are flown regularly in summer.

Stubaital paragliding today supports a small year-round economy of instructors, riggers, and mountain guides. Coordination runs from Moos 18 in Neustift im Stubaital, where the local association keeps launch records. The result is a place where recreational sport, alpine agriculture, and equipment testing occupy the same slopes without conflict — a rare arrangement, and one the valley has maintained for four decades.

The valley's air was mapped by farmers long before it was mapped by pilots.

Dress code

Wear sturdy footwear like sneakers or hiking shoes and weather-appropriate outdoor clothing. Because temperatures at mountain launch sites are typically 5–10°C cooler than in the valley, a windproof jacket is recommended.

Bags & security

Travel light, as storage for large bags is limited; small daypacks can be secured at the shop. All essential equipment, including your harness and helmet, is provided by your flight instructor.

Photography

You are encouraged to capture your aerial adventure, though for optimal results, consider pre-arranged media services. Using cameras during your stubai paragliding tour is permitted, but ensure they are securely strapped.

Families & strollers

Children can experience stubai paragliding from age 3, with specific tandem harnesses available for younger participants. We recommend planning a half-day for families to allow for rotation between group members.

Accessibility

The site office is located at ground level, but mountain take-offs require short walks on uneven paths. Tandem flights are generally accessible to most individuals, though pregnant women and children under 3 are excluded.

Food & drink

Cold refreshments are available at the shop's chill-out area, and mountain stations feature various dining facilities. Please dispose of all packaging appropriately to keep the valley clean.

Optimal Timing and Duration for Stubai Paragliding

Recommended time

3-4 hours

Plan for a half-day session to account for travel to the launch site, safety briefings, and equipment preparation for your stubai paragliding experience. Arriving during the 10:00–13:00 window helps you secure optimal thermal conditions for smooth tandem flights, as afternoon updrafts can sometimes affect scheduling. When booking stubai paragliding tours, allow extra time for potential weather-related shifts that may impact the take-off sequence. You do not need specific stubai paragliding tickets to enter the launch areas, but scheduling tandem services in advance ensures you manage your time efficiently despite daily crowd fluctuations.

Smooth Elfer launch

We rode the Elferbahn up from Neustift just after eight and the grass on the launch slope was still wet with dew. My pilot ran three steps and the wing lifted us straight into calm morning air over the valley floor. Sorting the stubai paragliding tickets online meant we were harnessed and briefed not long after arriving at the top station.

Serles filled the horizon

From maybe two thousand metres the Serles looked close enough to touch and the glacier sat white at the head of the valley. Our stubai paragliding flight caught a thermal off the sunlit ridge and we climbed for a few minutes before spiralling gently down toward Fulpmes. I expected to feel queasy and never did.

Windy but well handled

Conditions were gusty at Kreuzjoch so the team moved us to a lower launch without any fuss. The glide over the alpine pastures was steady and the landing meadow near Neustift was soft underfoot. Communication in English was clear from the briefing through to touchdown.

Cowbells from three hundred metres

Gleitschirmfliegen im Stubaital was the part of our Tyrol week that everyone still talks about. The pilot pointed out the Habicht and the cable car line at Schlick 2000 while we banked over dark forest. Cowbells were somehow still audible from well above the treetops.

Quiet air over Fulpmes

There is an odd silence once the harness takes your weight and the noise of the valley drops away underneath you. We tracked the ridge with the Inn Valley haze far to the north, and the pilot let me hold the brakes for a minute. The wingtip camera footage came through the same afternoon.

Snow on the launch ramp

Late winter meant boots and a hard packed ramp of snow, and the takeoff was quicker than I had braced for. Stubai paragliding gave us the whole valley in one sweep with the glacier lit pink at the edge of the light. My partner is uneasy about heights and still came down grinning.

Kreuzjoch to the valley floor

The Kreuzjoch takeoff is a wide grassy shoulder facing the Elfer and it feels far less exposed than the photos suggest. Our pilot worked a line of ridge lift for a while before setting up the approach over the river. Bring gloves, the air up there is a good deal colder than at the gondola station.

Larches turning gold

The larches were going gold across the slopes above Neustift and the contrast against the grey rock of the Habicht was worth the early start. Stubai paragliding tours run from more than one launch point, and ours went from the mid station because of low cloud. The whole operation felt organised rather than hurried.

Livelier than expected

We flew in the middle of the day and the thermals made it bumpier than I anticipated, though never alarming. The pilot narrated what the wing was doing the whole way down toward Fulpmes, which helped a lot. Views across the Stubai Valley landmarks, the glacier, the Serles, the small white churches, are what stayed with me.

Steady tandem flight

A Stubai Valley tandem flight was simpler to arrange than I expected and the pilot was calm and precise about everything. From the air you can trace the valley all the way from Neustift up to the ice at the top end. The landing on the meadow was gentle enough that I stayed on my feet.
